Over the centuries there have been many different adaptations of the Cinderella story. The Brothers Grimm published Aschenputtel which has a magical hazel bush on her mother’s grave instead of a fairy godmother, gold slipper instead of a glass one, and a 3-day festival instead of a Ball. This version ended with Aschenputtel marrying the prince and the step sisters becoming blind.
The oldest known version is the Chinese fairy tale, Ye Xian, from 850 A.D. It tells the tale of a deceased mother that is a reincarnated fish which is cooked and served to Ye Xian by her step mother and step sister. Ye Xian uses the bones to make a wish to have a beautiful dress to wear to the festival. Long story short, the king marries Ye Xian and she forgives her step family.
Poet Giambattista Basile included the story La Gatta Cenerentola in his famous children’s book in 1634. This story is recognized as the first European appearance of Cinderella even before Basile published it.
The most popular version was written by French author, Charles Perrault in 1697 called Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre which translates to Cinderella; or, The Little Glass Slipper. The unique additions by Charles Perrault includes the fairy godmother, pumpkin carriage, and the glass slipper.
For years to come, Cinderella will continue to appear in cultures all over the world. The development of the minor variations makes this classic fairy tale timeless.
