In 1765, the nursery rhyme “Hey Diddle Diddle” was printed in Mother Goose’s Melody. There have been wild speculations about the origin of this rhyme. In 1569, Thomas Preston’s play, A lamentable tragedy mixed ful of pleasant mirth, conteyning the life of Cambises King of Percia…, contains reference to a fiddle and a new dance called hey-didle-didle. Some connect it with the worship of Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of love, who is known for taking the form of cats and cows. Some believe that the “cat and the fiddle” refer to Catherine of Aragon who is also known as Katherine la Fidele. Another theory connects it to a pub game that’s played to fiddle music and involves a “cat” or trap ball. One more credible story has to do with Queen Elizabeth I. She was fond to dancing to her favorite fiddle music, “Hey diddle diddle”. She toyed with ministers and was called “the cat”. Over the centuries, nursery rhymes and stories change and history gets lost. We might never know the true meaning of some of these favorites but they will forever be preserved in our children’s memories.
